Letters to My Father is a multi-year, multi-disciplinary commission of new dance works all on the theme of male artists writing letters to their fathers, beginning with the premiere by Mr. Avilés. Over the next three seasons NYTB will premiere new works built as collaborations between dance maker and composer (or writer, or filmmaker, or digital artist) to tell the varied stories of the relationships between sons and fathers.

Song Before Spring, a 2016 commission, pairs Zhong-Jing Fang of American Ballet Theatre with NYTB’s Steven Melendez as co-choreographers. Jack Anderson wrote of its premiere in London’s Dancing Times: “This was not the gambol one might expect, but an emotional outburst that plunged young people into unruly and unpredictable passions.”
