
Michael Scales
Company Pianist & Music Director
Michael Scales has been a part of New York Theatre Ballet since 2010, first as a class pianist in the professional school, and eventually as the company's pianist and music director. During his tenure he has collaborated with and premiered works by Richard Alston, Gemma Bond, Milissa Payne Bradley, Nicolo Fonte, Antonia Franceschi, Steven Melendez, and Pam Tanowitz. Continuing the company's mission of performing with live music, Mr. Scales has also worked with répétiteurs of Frederick Ashton, Merce Cunningham, Agnes DeMille, José Limón, Jerome Robbins, and Antony Tudor on the restaging of choreographic masterworks using chamber music ensembles. Mr. Scales also serves as a company pianist with American Ballet Theatre, music director and pianist with Kaatsbaan International Dance Center and The School at Jacob's Pillow, class pianist with New York City Ballet and The School of American Ballet, and performs as a guest soloist with dance nationally and internationally.Michael Scales holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, where he studied piano with Dr. Maria Asteriadou, and a Masters of Music degree from James Madison University, where he studied under Dr. Lori Piitz. He is active as a collaborative pianist and chamber musician, as well as promoting and performing works by new composers.
